In April of 2000 I took a cruise to the Carribbean. I fell in love with it, and when I began painting wanted to do several paintings from the photos I took there. While moving I found the box of photo's from that trip, since Digital was new I still had to rely on 35mm at the time. Scanned this in to transfer to a canvas. The picture is of the harbor on St Thomas Island taken from the top of the boat.
While looking over it I saw some areas needed manipulated that just wouldn't work in a painting. Below is my result. I used a new looser technique than normal taking my plein air experience into account to let my freedom express.

Carribbean Beach 16x20 Oil
Back to the ones from the early days.....maybe not.
My fiance had really liked a previous oval caribbean coast painting I had done for my mom and wanted to steal it. I told her I'd paint her one, only bigger. it's been 2 1/2 years since the last version and my talent has improved greatly over that time. This one was a lot of fun and turned out much better than the previous and is now hanging in our bedroom.

Countryside Coastal 10x14 Oil
Father's Day came around and I didn't want to do a plein air like on Mother's Day. I decided to take a page out of a friend of mine's book of creating a place from imagination. i wanted something very country-like while exhibiting the ocean as well. my fiance has decided that this was resembling somewhere in South Carolina or Maine. But definately Atlantic Coast. I've deemed it "Countryside Coastal". I plan to do a couple more out of imagination in the future. It was alot of fun and pushed me in my experience as an artist and the creativity we hold.
Saguaro National Park East 24x36 Oil
I was finally able to get around to doing a decent sized canvas. Wanting my first to explore the area in which we live, the Sonoran Desert. This one measuring 24x36
Working on this one just here and there between other paintings was my goal. I knew I could do this one Alla Prima but wanted to give it a session time. Making sure all my layers were laid in properly.
This is from the Saguaro National Park's trail off Broadway Blvd, in Tucson, Arizona. I wanted a view of the Tanque Verde and Catalina Mountains as well as several Saguaro's and Prickly Pears. I let this one get worked on occassionally over 4-5 weeks with only about several hours each session being spent on it. All in all it turned out quite nicely.

ARC Tropper 8x10 Oil
Star Wars Characters the saga continues..........wasnt' it just a few months ago it was Lord of the Rings coming out all the time in my paintings?????
Another in a series of Star Wars Character Art. This time for my boys. They really like Jedi and Clone Troopers. This Arc Trooper was painted at the request of my older two to hang in their room. My oldest son's favorite color is Red so he was done in Red and my middle child wants his done in either blue or orange.

Desert Wash 9x12 Oil
Out with the old and in with the new......
....A painting that I didn't particularly like from years before needed to be painted over. Rather than waste a new canvas I thought of recycling one of my old ones I never liked.
This painting of a dry riverbed out in Tanque Verde floods every year during Summer Monsoons. But in the spring this 11 mile stretch of sand is lined with tall cottonwood trees and desert wildflowers.

Mt Lemmon Snowy Winter 5x7 Oil
Living in the desert it gets quite hot, extremely hot. Especially today on the longest day of the year, Summer Solstace! We experience temperatures in the 115's by early summer. But the winter which does get cold, but not that cold because you still have to run the air conditioning in your car during the day to stay cool. We decided back in December to get to a place less warm and more cool, fortunately for us we have one of the best mountain regions in Arizona. We took a trip up the mountain on a day it snowed and enjoyed sledding, playing in the snow (very rare for this far south), and snapping pictures. When we officially hit 100 a few weeks ago I needed to cool down, atleast in my head so I painted this from our trip six months ago!
Fountain Park 5x7 Oil
A trip from December to Fountain Hills, Arizona. This nice quiet and yet wonderful neck of Arizona. This park holds the worlds largest fountain that shoots up every hour from the center of the lake. Though not pictured here, the view of Red Rock and these Pines and the WWII Memorial in the background was picturesque. My Fiance who grew up in FH, AZ really enjoyed this one.
Halo 2 Master Chief 9x12 Oil
A follow up to a painting started almost two years ago.
I was going through my drawers of canvas' that I had stretched and found this at the bottom. I had begun this nearly two years ago and left it alone for a later re-working. I pulled it out on a night where I wasn't particularly inspired to paint and starting mixing and laying in my colors. I couldn't believe the amounts of variations of Ultramarine Blue, and Cad. Yellow Light and Pale I had to mix to create all the different greens, blues, and yellows, and browns for this piece. I worked on it for about 4 1/2 hours until it was completed. In the end I think it turned out quite nicely!!

Reid Park Plein Air 8x10 Oil
After nearly six months of having not been able to make it out to plein air, I finally made it out. Wasn't sure where to go but knew i had yet to do one at Reid Park. It was mothers day and there were lots of parties at the park, so many many people looking on. It was nice to be able to get out of the studio for a while and paint outdoors. I hope to make it out again next Sunday!

Anne Hathaway Portrait 6x8 Oil
Actress Anne Hathaway from the upcoming "Get Smart" movie best known from Princess Diaries movies. I felt she had a very photogenic face and and infectuous smile and needed to paint her. I enjoyed this very much and have decided to do another famous person portrait of either John Wayne or Matthew Mcchonahey.

welcome sign heart shaped rock
On my fiance's birthday we went hiking up in Mt Lemmon. She found a heart-shaped rock and really wanted something painted on it for sitting next to our front door outside as a welcome sign. She took a picture of this ridge up ahead centering two ponderosa pines to either side. I then recently painted it in Oils and added a Welcome Sign to it. It now sits infront of our house!!! Thanks for looking!!!

Big Sur 16x20 Oil
From the california northern coast in the area between Big Sur and Monterey. I enjoyed this one as my second large coastal. The colors weren't as rich as my previous and that was to be expected with cooler waters. Also the photo will need to be retaken to control the camera flash that left a glare in the mid-right of the frame.

Southern California Coast 16x20 Oil
This painting depicts a pier in a cove. This was done from a reference photo of Dana Point Harbor as it was being developed. The pier is all that is seen and the starting of the road going down. Today there are buildings and parking lots all over the beach front and a sandbar stretching out from the point. To the south you would find the harbor. I really enjoyed doing this one. I miss California very much and am looking forward to my return this summer.

I decided to do something different and try painting on glass instead of canvas. I only did two of these on glass, and while I found it interesting and different I don't plan to do anymore on glass. Canvas is much easier to work with and for me I find that it dries too slow on glass compared to canvas. I'll stick to canvas even though these were fun!!

Agua Caliente Park Plein Air 9x12 Oil
We decided to take a day at the park and watch and feed the ducks. Megan and I picknicked for the afternoon and as the sun was getting ready to set, she layed back and began to read a book while I painted. It was early November when I did this so the ducks had since left to a warmer area of the park by this point. I had hoped to have had some of them in the painting. Maybe next time.
